Good afternoon,
Digital Learning Initiative Assignment #1
Today I sent home the Digital Learning Initiative Assignment #1 (which is the Snow Day Make-up for Friday, March 9th). For this assignment, the students will be working on a cross-curriculum assignment about “Simple Machines” in preparation/review for the Science MCAS in May. All students will be expected to:
1. Read an article about simple machines
2. Write an open-response about simple machines
3. Answer 17 multiple-choice questions about simple machines
4. Solve 8 math word problems calculating work (scientifically speaking)
5. Watch a video link to further their understanding of simple machines (optional)
The materials and links needed for this assignment were given to students today in a paper format. All materials, links, and reference sheets to help answer science open response questions will be posted to Google Classroom at 6 AM tomorrow morning, Friday, April 13th. This is an at home assignment. The work must be completed between Friday, April 13th- Friday, April 27th. All work must be turned into me in person or digitally in Google Classroom by Friday, April 27th in order for your child to be counted as "present" for this snow day makeup. Work that is not completed and/or handed in after April 28th will count the student as "absent" for this day. I am asking for your support in encouraging students to complete this at home assignment and ask me any questions if needed. Mrs. Nolan is also offering extra before school help to students from 7:30AM-8:10AM from Monday, April 23rd through Thursday, April 26th to help complete this assignment if needed. Computers are also available at that time for students who might not have available access at home.ELA MCAS Testing
Monday, April 23rd (yes, the first day back from April vacation) will be the first day for ELA MCAS testing for all 5th graders. The second of the two sessions is scheduled for Thursday, April 26th. We will be starting the testing first thing in the morning after Morning Meeting and a brief yoga stretch to balance our bodies and minds. The students are well prepared with the academics and should be excited ("excited" is a stretch... I know) to show all their smarts! If you are wondering what you could do to help set your child up for success on Monday (and every testing day), I would suggest the following:
Make sure that your child is well rested, eats breakfast, and has a healthy snack packed.
See that your child arrives at school on time and is relaxed.
Comfort counts. Send a sweater if it’s a cool day. Dress in layers for a warm day.
Encourage your child to do their best work possible and to have a positive attitude. (That's all we can ask!)
Thank you for your support with both the Digital Learning Initiative and the ELA MCAS preparation!
Best wishes,
Amanda
