Good afternoon and Happy Friday,
We have wrapped up our our Geography & Ancient Civilizations and did some final in-school review today. The kids have a study guide, the ancient civilization note packet, and vocabulary words to use to help review over the weekend. Hopefully they have been spending a little time each night preparing for this upcoming benchmark and are feeling confident. Our next unit will be a science unit about Earth's Four Systems.
Book talk drafts are due on Monday. I have given students several days of in class time to work on this as it is their first time, and I have asked them to use their checklist to self-revise and edit before turning it into Google Classroom by Monday at 10AM. I will be reviewing these and returning the drafts to them by next Wednesday, so they have time to make any final revision changes and prepare for their presentation to the class the following week. The purpose of these presentations is to work on public speaking skills as well as give and get book recommendations from peers.
All students have finished their personal narratives, and we had a great writing celebration today with a toast of water and a poem about writing. The kids then broke off into groups of four to share their writing in small, encouraging groups. My hopes are to have a writing celebration at the end of every large writing unit, and at the end of the year, invite parents to join us too. Our next larger writing unit is informational writing, and we will be starting that after Thanksgiving break.
I am looking forward to seeing you all next Monday or Tuesday for conferences. Last Friday, I sent a notice home with the time and date of your scheduled conference and a few questions to help me best prepare for our fifteen minutes together. If you haven't yet filled that out, I kindly ask that you send it back on Monday with your child. If you need a reminder of your time, please don't hesitate to email me. Also, your children have organized portfolios of all their term one work (to this date) and reflected on their work. The portfolios can go home next week as long as they are returned to school by Friday, December 2nd. They did a written reflection, but they also recorded their work using an app called AudioBoom. A QR code will be displayed on our bulletin board in the stairwell leading up to the second floor that will link you to their audio recording. Please take a second to scan your child's QR code as you come in for your conference. There are directions on the board too if needed.
Here are some upcoming events:
-Delayed opening on Monday the 21st due to parent/teacher conferences
-No school on Tuesday the 22nd due to parent/teacher conferences
-Early release on Wednesday due to Thanksgiving Break (Students are reminded to wear sneakers on Wednesday to participate in the Race for Education)
As always, do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns.
Best wishes,
Amanda
